The Unknown
Black ink, white pen on black card and white bristol paper
29.7 x 42 cm
2021
The Unknown is a contrasting creative piece which is created using a combination of black and white ink on black card and bristol paper.
After researching and connecting with different artists I soon found my two strongest inspirations. The First being Jack Carden who is a small artist on social media. His work is very busy and complicated looking. I was most inspired by his highly contrasting tones and fine line work which was developed using white pen.
The second artist I most connected with was Huang Zhiyang who is a Japanese calligraphy artist. His works are also very busy but have more confusing images. Zhiyang’s works are difficult to figure out which makes them captivating. I was most inspired by the way he uses the black ink to create organic works.
The influence behind by work is all of the unknowns in life as well as the beauty of nature. Things such as space and death are prominent themes as well as the simplest beauties of nature such as plants, animals, and the skies. The message behind the work was not to stress about the unknowns and instead focus on the simplistic beauty of the things around us.
The processes behind the work show that I have successfully learnt how to use a quill loaded with black ink as well as exploring new drawing textures/papers. The process began with planning out the 4 different black and white rectangular pieces of paper by sketching out the desired design, these sketches then turned into fluid ink lines by using the black ink on white paper and the white ink on black paper. After a few setbacks and re-do’s I felt as though by piece was complete. The 4 squared were glued onto the A3 paper and the work was finished.
