Fruit Series
Water Soluble Oil Paint on Board
Size: 15cmx15cm each
2021
Fruit Series is a series of oil paint on board still life paintings which include various fruit which illustrates the beauty in natural produce which is not normally noticed in everyday life.
Clarice Beckett was explored which inspired the use of her composition the vibrate colours she has used, technique of shape and detail which has been incorporated and used throughout my work.
Hans Heysen’s Autumn Fruits was investigated which inspired the use of composition, elements within the image such as subject matter for the fruits. His technique of colour using different contrasting colours to create depth within the painting with each element of the subject matter inspired my artwork to use bright and complementing colours which bring a fresh and calming atmosphere and depth to the pieces. In Clarice Becketts’s Zinnias shows how she uses neutral backgrounds with the subject matter being bright and bold, this influenced my work as I have chosen to do two neutral colour ground in the background of my pieces and the subject matter of the paintings using bright vibrate complimenting colours that go well with the colour grounds of the piece.
The process of creating Fruit Series was a time-consuming process. The size of the boards used was marked our on a large wooden board which was then cut to the sizes needed, these boards needed to be coated with gesso before painting on them with oil paint this protected the board from being damaged. The backgrounds of the painting which was applying a thin layer of oil paint which was then left to dry, which lead to the subject matter of the pieces being painted on next while the background had not been completely dry which allowed for blending.
Throughout the painting process the use of blending with the background and working on the piece before it had completely dried worked well as I was able to blend the colours together and apply the paint on smoothly. Creating the series of paintings was time consuming and took a long time to create as there needed to be time to do details, correct tone and shadow/lighting for the paintings to look realistic.
