I have recently gained an interest in interior design and therefore thought to explore environmental design. My interest for interior design begun recently while exploring university degrees. After researching about what an interior designer does and their role in helping customer’s desired space come to life, my interest grew. Last year my design major was creating a graphic design for the black lives matter campaign. I enjoyed completing this task, however, did not find a great enough interest to do something similar this year.
Working through the design process, I brainstormed a variety of interior styles and what furniture and colours they included. During this stage, I explored space and researched how furniture is arranged within. After coming to a decision to explore the Hamptons style, the brief was developed with the interior and style in mind. My requirements included designing a café located at Bondi Beach that focused on creating a workspace for businesspeople. It had to be centered around the Hamptons style, the space would be interlinked between the café and work area ensuring it flows with elegance and appeals to the target audience.
I researched the general Hamptons style including its colour pallet, architecture and popular furniture styles/items that are used, the next step was to delve into deeper Hamptons research. From here, I researched the specifics such as patterns and fabrics or textures that are commonly used. I also used two artists as inspiration to challenge me to recreate some of their designs in the Hamptons style. Frank Lloyd Wright’s work inspired me to attempt combining organic lines and clean lines together. His work was neat which inspired me to incorporate elegance into the style. Mabley Handler’s work is based around the Hamptons therefore was easy to recreate her designs. I was inspired by the arrangement of furniture in her designed spaces and the colour choices in her work. After research, I drew my own blueprints of possible café designs which I further replicated on the app being used to create my final design. I enjoyed this part of the design process as I had the freedom to explore and experiment with designs that I liked as well as using the app to construct 3D plans. Most of the designs included a kitchen to work out the proportion and scale of the 2D blueprints and I believe these were most effective. I refined one design that I thought would fit the brief and worked on the details of colours schemes and matching furniture.
I have decided to present my final on a computer as a 3D video presentation of the interior and exterior of the café. I attempted to make the surroundings of the building look at though the it sits on the end of the beach, however I had to work with what was offered to me on the software I used.
I think my final design fulfilled the design brief. I completed an interlinked café and study area space that appeals to rich or high-end businesspeople/customers. I think the design process helped in reaching the end goal of a final design and allowed me to think creatively and create a design I was proud of.
